1920 Humphries & Dawes OK Junior with the 292cc Union engine.
Ernie Humphries and Charles Dawes began making motorcycles at their factory in York road, Hall Green, Birmingham in 1899.
Prior to 1919 they manufactured various models, using engines from several manufacturers (Villiers, J.A.P, Precision, Minerva, Blackburne, De-Dion, Green, Bradshaw)
All the machines carried the ‘OK’ trade name.
After the first world war, there was so much demand for affordable transport that the company decided to concentrate their efforts into manufacturing just one model, the OK Junior.
At first these bikes were only available as direct belt drive with the Union 292cc (2¾ hp) 2 stroke engine made by Josiah Parkes & Sons Ltd of the Union works, Willenhall.
Josiah Parkes & Sons were well known and respected locksmiths who branched out into engine manufacture and although Union engines are now very rare, Union locks can still be found to this day.
The C.A.V magneto is mounted directly on the end of the crankshaft by means of a semi flexible coupling. This arrangement was only used for a short period (1919 -1920) as the distortion of the coupling under load caused timing issues. After 1920, the rights to the Union engine were bought by Humphries & Dawes, the design was changed and the engines re-badged as OK. The new engines had the magneto mounted on a platform behind the cylinder and driven by a chain in the conventional way.
The partnership of Humphries & Dawes lasted until 1926 when they sold the York road factory to Velorce, the makers of 'Velocette' motorcycles.
Ernie Humphries began again in another factory. His new company produced motorcycles badged 'OK Supreme' from 1926 until 1940. Charles Dawes started the Dawes cycle company, who are still in business today and still based in Birmingham.
No factory records exist for these motorcycles, but each bike carried a small brass plaque on to which the machines details were stamped. This particular OK Junior Union was built on the 23rd June 1920, registered in Leicestershire and still carries its original registration number. Little is known about the early years of this bike but it was restored in the late 1970’s to be displayed in a private collection/museum in Huddersfield, Yorkshire until it closed in 2001. Again, little of the bikes history is known until it popped up in auction in 2018. The sale details state that the machine had been owned by the same person since 2005.
I rode the OK on the VMCC Banbury run. With a good shove off the line, the bike fired up and off we went. The 292cc Union engine ran very well until I got caught up behind a side car outfit which missed a gear on a hill and forced me to stop. The OK started again with a push and got around the course without further issue.
Riding this 101 year old bike can be challenging, a mixture of lot of fun and a terrifying death ride 😄

6/15/21 Ok going to try this again. I have a PPV for sale in the Council Bluffs, Iowa area. I had it for sale here earlier and had it sold but it was not a good fit for the person that wanted it, so we stopped the sale. This vehicle is pretty much original.
the good: Some drive chain has been replaced and a new brake cable and lever have been installed. Vehicle is operational and in good shape for its age. striping, decals, reflectors and lower body are good as well as the seats. The seat cushions are still there and in fair shape.
The bad: The hood has a crack at the front that has been repaired from underneath. there is also a small crack at the back of the hood on one side. The back wheels are rusty as most of these are. There is no windshield and vehicle does show some wear for its age.

"Scott enthusiast and agent Albert E Reynolds began offering his own accessories for Scott motorcycles in the 1920s, going on to market modified Scotts under the 'Aero Special' (later 'Reynolds Special') name in the 1930s ...After WW2 Reynolds made a solitary AER prototype of advanced design: the fully enclosed AER featured a welded multi-tubular frame, hub-centre steering and a disc front brake. A Villiers 250cc twin was installed for initial tests. An article published in Motorcycle Sport (March 1965 edition) states that the prototype was taxed, insured and run for many months before the project was abandoned. This car was built by the owner of the manufacturing company and was bought complete and so is not a kit car, it is beautifully and skilfully built. The V5c shows that it was manufactured in 2012 and it is registered as a Tricycle weighing 390kg. It has covered 4600 miles from new.
It is powered by a Moto Guzzi 850 T3 engine with Guzzi gearbox and final drive. I have just renewed the engine oil and the transmission oils. There is no reverse gear. It is fitted with a deep sump which improves engine breathing and cooling. It has a removable steering wheel for easier entry. This car is not immaculate, but is in very, very good all-round condition, there are some small areas where the paint has not adhered to the aluminium panels and some small chips on the mudguards.
Tonneau cover in very good condition, this covers the cockpit fully, but can be zipped into half for solo driving. It has 12 months MoT, all rubber boots on the front suspension and steering were replaced prior to MoT and is ready to go. Choice of stylish but slightly illegal black number plates or legal reflective ones. If you were to buy this new now, the price is around £27,000
This is a very reluctant sale, I was going to buy a Morgan 3-wheeler, but after reading several negative reviews, I opted for this one. It is not as refined as a Morgan, but is much closer to the original spirit of the 1930’s Morgan than the present day incarnation. It is plenty quick enough and provides great driving fun at legal speeds. However, my arthritis is creeping on and I am finding it increasingly difficult to get in and out. I would prefer a cash sale, but I may be interested in a part exchange with a well made 2CV based 3-wheeler with easier access. I am asking £12,500, I am open to offers and I can deliver anywhere in mainland UK by trailer for an agreed price. I can hire a trailer for £50 and will deliver at cost. I was likely the 2nd owner, as I don't recall getting it for a present and I've had it since the late 70's.
It's 100% original and I bought an OEM sissy bar/rear seat strut on eBay about 20 years ago to replace the bent one, which is included in the sale.
It’s missing the rear seat reflector, tires have cracks, but hold air, chrome has some light pitting and there are some paint chips here and there, but overall it’s a collectable Schwinn Krate bike in great condition.
